Everyone picks their own and you are moving in an hour — the right way to start a day this full. Sarabeth's Bakery, Amy's Bread, Friedman's for a sit-down, Doughnuttery if the kids get a vote.

Two minutes west is the Hudson River and Pier 57's rooftop, if you want ten quiet minutes by the water before the day turns into Midtown.

Ayada Thai's counter — the mango sticky rice — is in this building, but it opens for lunch, not breakfast. You are back here Sunday evening for exactly that.

Stalls open between 8:00 and 9:00, so 9:00 is the safe arrival. For seven people this is the easiest breakfast of the trip — nobody has to agree on anything, and there is no table to wait for.

Saturday at 8:00 is the most available curtain of the week. Nearly every Broadway show plays a Saturday evening, while a lot of houses go dark on Sunday nights — which is exactly why the show moved here.

Adam can still buy at TKTS Lincoln Center: the booth runs Tuesday to Saturday, 11–6. Going at 11:00 on Saturday gives the best shot at seven seats together.

What the swap buys youSunday evening is now free for sunset at Edge — the version of that visit actually worth having. You get the show and the golden hour instead of trading one for the other.

Meal gap · filledDinner at Ayada

Ayada Thai, inside Chelsea Market, 75 9th Ave @ 15th St · open daily 11:30–9:30 · book on Resy

Ayada does a full dinner, not just the dessert — it is a proper sit-down Thai restaurant, one of the most acclaimed in the city, and it happens to be inside the market. So this is one table, one bill, dinner and the mango sticky rice in the same place. Much simpler than grazing seven people across a food hall.

Worth ordering: papaya salad, tom yum, crispy pork belly, and the whole fried fish if the table is game. Then the sticky rice.

Book a 7-top on Resy now. A large table on a Sunday evening is the one thing that will not happen on a walk-in. If it is full, the market stalls around it — Los Tacos No. 1, Very Fresh Noodles, Miznon — are the no-booking fallback, and you can still get the sticky rice to go.

Dinner first, deck after. You finish about 6:50 and Hudson Yards is fifteen minutes north — which puts you on the 100th floor as the light turns.

Leave by 7:00The only hard edge tonight. Tell Ayada when you book that you need to be out by 7:00 for a timed entry.

Finale · pick oneThe Edge or The Tram

Sunset ≈ 7:50 PM · book the 7:30 entry · one of them needs a ticket

From the hotel these two are about the same distance, 28 to 30 minutes either way — so the tram is not actually closer. What separates them is what comes next: The Edge is 15 minutes from dinner, and dinner is 15 minutes from the theater. The tram is the wrong side of town for both.

Recommended

The Edge

Ticketed · ~$40+ a head · ~$280 for 7
  • 100th floor, outdoor deck, glass floor. The one they will talk about.
  • Faces west over the Hudson, out past the river and the whole west side.
  • Stay past dusk and watch the city come on underneath you.
  • Timed entry, and sunset slots go first — this is the one booking to make now.

Dinner is already doneYou ate at Ayada at 5:20, fifteen minutes south of here. Come down whenever you like and head straight home.

The free one

Roosevelt Island Tram

One subway fare · ~$3 a head · ~$20 for 7
  • Five minutes each way, ~250 ft up, over the East River.
  • No ticket, no booking, no time slot. Turn up and ride.
  • Best on the ride back, facing the Manhattan skyline head-on.
  • Round trip is about 20 minutes, so it is easy on a third-day family.

Getting here is the costIt is across town on the east side, so you would cross and cross back before dinner and a curtain. Free, but it costs you the evening.

Four windows — 3:45 Sunday is just where it sits nowThe deck runs 8:00 AM to midnight in summer, last elevator about 11:10 PM, so it fits almost anywhere. Cheapest to most expensive, in schedule terms:

1 · Friday, ~10:00 PM — walk out of the theater and go. Ten minutes away, city fully lit, nothing after it. Costs nothing in the plan; lands you back near 11:30 at the end of your heaviest day.

2 · Saturday, ~9:45 AM — they do open at 8:00, and it works: leave at 9:00, deck 9:45–11:00, Penn by 11:15, stadium 12:30 for a 1:00 kick. Clearest light and the emptiest the deck gets. The catch is the hard deadline behind it.

3 · Sunday, 3:45 PM — where it is now. Nothing to rush, easy slots, but daylight and August haze.

4 · Saturday, ~8:00 PM — the only way to get sunset (7:53) and a Sunday show. Hudson Yards is a ten-minute walk from Penn, where you land off the game train, and nothing on the crawl afterwards closes. But that train is the least predictable thing all weekend and Edge does not forgive a missed slot — book 8:00, not 7:30.

Against the tram the gap for seven is roughly $280 to $20, which is the other number worth weighing.

An aircraft carrier you walk around inside, with a Space Shuttle, a Concorde, and a submarine you can go down into. Nothing else on this trip is remotely like it, and it is the rare thing that works the same for a nine-year-old and a fifty-year-old.

  • SubGrowler, the guided-missile submarine on the pier — narrow, hot, and the part kids talk about afterwards.
  • TicketsBook the 10:00 slot for seven online the night before. It is the busiest hour and the ticket line is outdoors.
Or: The Squadron, five minutes from your bagsF-35 flight simulators at 7 World Trade Center, 250 Greenwich St, 10th floor — a five-minute walk from the hotel, open Monday 9–5, about two hours. On a departure day that is a real advantage: no 35-minute trip out to a pier and back.

Cost for a flying party of seven: Cadet $95 each ≈ $665 · The Winning Team $145 each ≈ $1,015 · Top Gun $185 each ≈ $1,295. Book direct at thesquadron.com.

Two catches. Minimum age is 12 — anyone younger cannot fly, though non-flying family watch free with no reservation, so a mixed group still works. And it covers much the same ground as the Intrepid, so pick one, not both.

Times below assume a 7:25 PM domestic flight — add an hour if it is international

Standard advice is 2 hours before a domestic departure, so you want to be at the airport by 5:25 PM. By train, working backwards — and the good news is your hotel sits on top of the right lines for two of the three:

  • JFKThe cleanest one. A from Fulton St, three minutes from the door, straight through to Howard Beach with no transfer, then AirTrain. About 65 minutes. Leave at 3:45 PM.
  • EWR23 from Fulton to 34 St–Penn, NJ Transit to Newark Liberty Airport, then AirTrain. Two changes, about 70 minutes. Leave at 3:40 PM. Buy the NJ Transit leg in the app first.
  • LGANo train reaches LaGuardia. It is the MR or 7 to 74 St–Broadway and then the Q70 bus — about 75 minutes with luggage, and the one airport where two cars really are the better call.
